Segmented Vessels

Segmented vessels are made with a process that starts with small pieces of wood that are glued up to create the rough shape of the vessel, then turned to get the thickness and shape desired. Segmentation sometimes allows use of wood that would be difficult to use or would otherwise be wasted, and also allows the inclusion of other woods to create interesting patterns beyond that provided by the grain of the wood. Most of our segmented vessels use Hawaiian grown woods for the basis of the item, but may also include other exotic woods to create interesting and special patterns or effects.

Creating a segmented vessel takes considerably longer than turning an item of the same size and shape from a raw block of wood. However, this extra time is sometimes partially offset by the amount of control the artist has in the shape and detail incorporated in the object.

Whenever possible, each urn will be shown with all four sides (90 degree clockwise rotation from the leftmost picture towards the right), and from slightly above.

Please see our note about Interior Volume (capacity).
